The Trust’s charitable object is to promote worldwide the human rights elaborated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and other international and regional human rights treaties and standards, including the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict (OPAC).

The organization seeks to fulfill its purpose through advocating for durable prevention mechanisms to prevent child soldiering; seeking the release and reintegration of children recruited or used in hostilities; contributing to obtaining redress for, and relieving the needs of, such children; as well as carrying out research and monitoring on the above issues; and supporting local and national nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working with, and for, children in affected regions.

In 2011 it was decided to move from a structure based on a Coalition of NGOs to an independent NGO working on child soldier issues and the name, Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers, was changed to Child Soldiers International. A board of trustees, comprised of individuals bringing a range of relevant skills and expertise (on substance and organizational matters), assumed responsibility for setting strategic aims and guiding the work of the organization.
