ChallengesThe UN Security Council has repeatedly condemned the use of children as soldiers and called for action to stop the practice. A number of international treaties exist to protect children from involvement in armed conflict. In many countries national laws have been passed to protect children from being used in hostilities. Yet despite near-universal condemnation tens of thousands of children continue to be actively involved in armed forces. All these children deserve protection from threats to their life and security, to freedom from violence, forced labour and sexual exploitation. Their right to live in their communities with access to healthcare, education and work opportunities must be guaranteed. Former child soldiers must be provided with assistance and opportunities to rebuild their lives and girls soldiers in particular need help in dealing with rape and other forms of sexual violence.
